Following their 2019 exhibition Florachromes, Arja Hop & Peter Svenson will present their latest photo, titled Felwa, at Huis Marseille on Thursday 23 May. In this book, Hop & Svenson explore an essential paradox of nature, in the context of the Veluwe region in the Netherlands, namely that change is the only constant.
The book, which came about with the support of a successful crowdfunding campaign, marks the latest chapter in Hop and Stevenson’s art practice. Structured like ripples in a pool, the book begins with references to the past examining our ancient emotional relationship with the world in terms of mythology and belief and ends with the scientific data based view we have today. A unifying theme in the publication are the colours from extracted plant dyes, a recurring element in Hop and Svenson’s work that was also featured in their exhibition Florachromes, which was previously shown at Huis Marseille.
Programme
After a welcome by Nanda van den Berg, director of Huis Marseille, writer Lucette ter Borg and botanical philosopher Norbert Peeters – who also wrote a text for the book – will speak. Then Arja Hop and Peter Svenson themselves will take the stage to hand over the first book to graphic designer Edwin van Gelder, followed by a brief Q&A. At the end, there will be drinks in the museum shop.
Arja Hop & Peter Svenson
Amsterdam-based artist duo Arja Hop and Peter Svenson have been working since 2015 on analogue photographic research projects. They use analogical film and its response to complex colours as a research instrument making their analogical process simultaneously subject and medium. Their exhibition Florachromes was on view at Huis Marseille from December 2019 to March 2020.
